The challenge of mapping for real world motorcycling

Since day one, REVER prioritized maps and navigation as the backbone of its platform. But building a navigation tool for motorcyclists is a different game than standard GPS apps. Riders need more than just a route from point A to point B. They need routes that match their style, terrain that’s clearly mapped, and access to it all whether they are online or off-the-grid.

To meet the expectations of the REVER rider community, REVER developers had to solve for:

• Offline Accessibility: REVER users often ride in remote areas with little or no cellular coverage. Downloadable, high-detail offline maps were non-negotiable.
• Custom Routing: For motorcyclists, route optimization does not always mean the quickest way. Riders might prefer to select the most scenic, twisty, or challenging route. REVER needed a solution that allowed flexible, multi-stop route creation.
• Detailed On- and Off-Road Mapping: With so many riders exploring unpaved routes and trails, REVER required maps with topographic data, terrain overlays, and granular detail beyond what is mapped for cars.

While evaluating mapping solutions, the REVER team found that most options failed to support the rugged needs of motorcycle travel. Some providers lacked offline capabilities, others didn’t offer the flexibility for custom ride planning, and few understood the importance of community features or off-road detail.

The Mapbox Navigation SDK helped REVER to deliver one of the most requested features from its user community: turn-by-turn navigation. Riders no longer have to glance at a static map mid-ride; instead, they can stay focused, safe, and confidently on-course thanks to seamless voice-guided directions. Turn-by-turn navigation is now a core feature for REVER and continues to drive strong engagement and 5-star feedback. Since rolling out core Mapbox-powered features, the REVER user base has grown by 580%.
